Welcome to brynecarruthers.com

I love performing music, I love composing, but most of all I love teaching. The purpose of this website is to share free information on writing music and the creative process. This is intended to help those interested in writing music to increase their confidence in their creative abilities. I hope that by sharing what I’ve learned after nearly two decades of writing music, others may learn from the mistakes I made along the way and have a more productive and enjoyable experience of mastering the craft.

Some people are naturally good at writing music, and may have little or no formal training. Paul McCartney is a good example of this.

These people however generally do not make good teachers.

Others have natural ability, and some training, but lack the confidence in their own abilities.

This was me for a very long time.

You do need talent in order to be able to write music. I cannot teach that, nobody can.

But even a little bit of talent will go a long way with some hard work, and most importantly, proper guidance from an experienced instructor.

However much talent you have, it helps when you know what you’re doing.

I started writing music at a young age, around age 10. While I wrote a lot of music throughout my teenage years and early twenties, this period was largely under-productive for me in my opinion. I just didn’t feel like I knew what I was doing, or whether what I created was any good.

Through many years of practice, study, and trial and error, I eventually uncovered a number of techniques that took the element of chance out of writing music.

Now if I want to write something good, I just sit down and do it. I don’t need to wait for inspiration or if I’m in the ‘right mood’.

This is what I will attempt to explain on my website.

There are some great musicians who possess many musical secrets which they have no intention to share.

My attitude is, the more good music there is out there, the better it is for everybody.

I’ll also be sharing my music on this website. I believe in order to be an effective teacher, you have to actually be able to do what you’re teaching. You can listen and decide for yourself whether you think I know what I’m talking about. I’ll also be analyzing music to shed light on how good music is constructed.  In the future I also plan to offer products and services to suit the needs of the followers of this website, as this becomes apparent.

I hope you enjoy learning and studying information I will be presenting here in the future. I know I will greatly enjoy sharing it.
